Amsterdam is full. It’s too busy. It doesn’t belong to us anymore. In a few years it will be like Venice: a Disneyland, just for tourists.” Local people’s complaints about overtourism ring true not only for the Dutch capital, but for other vortices of visitor frenzy across the country.

The tiny town of Giethoorn, population 2,500 – a cluster of cottages looped and linked by canals, like a rural Venice – attracts some 350,000 visitors a year from China alone, thus imitating La Serenissima in another respect.
